CLASSIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Activities Custodian
FACILITY: Varies – Primarily Hardin High and Middle Schools
REPORTS TO: Activities Director / Building Principal / Maintenance Director / Superintendent
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The person in this position keeps the Districts’ school buildings and grounds in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Arrange and take down furniture and equipment for special activities and athletics
Check locker rooms before and after events; clean as needed
Clean spills and messes as needed
Secure buildings at end of shift
Sweep, Mop, and scrub floors as needed
Check restrooms clean, replenish supplies, and fill dispensers as needed
Pick up trash and litter and empty and clean trash and garbage receptacles as needed
Support student groups with set up and tear down of concessions areas; confirm areas are clean before group leaves
Maintain areas adjacent to buildings in clean, safe, sanitary condition
Remove snow from walkways and steps as needed
Maintain work related records and prepare various reports as directed
Maintain communication with other custodial staff
Is responsible for reporting unruly student activities, loitering, vandalism, or similar situations
Assist AD with inventory and cleaning of storage areas when needed
Thoroughly clean bleachers, walkways and floors on a regular basis
Operate common power cleaning equipment and hand cleaning tools
Use chemicals and cleaning solvents in a safe and effective manner
Perform routine nontechnical maintenance duties with the use of household hand tools
Keep all custodial storage areas clean and organized
Keep tools and equipment clean and operational
Assist visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within building and in obtaining and setting up needed equipment
Serve as an ambassador for the school district with the public

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in cleaning various types of surfaces and furniture
Knowledge of basic safety practices related to custodial work
Ability to perform heavy physical labor
Ability to work effectively without close supervision
Ability to operate specialized cleaning and maintenance tools and equipment
Ability to understand and follow a work schedule
Ability to keep basic work records and make reports
Ability to understand and carryout oral and written directions and instructions
Ability maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Ability to handle stressful situations
Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities
Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student matters
Strong people skills
Ability to perform duties with an awareness of all District requirements and Board policies
EXPERIENCE:
Previous Custodial or janitorial experience preferred
EQUIPMENT USED:
Cleaning and maintenance tools and equipment, including but not limited to vacuum, floor polishers, floor strippers, miscellaneous scrubbing equipment
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Building custodians
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works inside and outside. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with time constraints. The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, stretch, push heavy equipment, lift and carry equipment and objects. The employee must be able to lift, carry and / or move up to 50 pounds. Must have dexterity of hands and fingers to finger and grasp objects. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to be able to speak and to hear and to exchange information.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee will often perform routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Guidance and reinforcement are usually available. The employee may be involved in social interactions which require oral and written communications.

Our Districts have strong academic programs utilizing a variety of techniques for our students. There are programs for special education students and vocational students. There are a variety of music, drama, art, and sports opportunities for students of all ages. We are a Class A district, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, with approximately 1,800 students. The student body is 80% Native American.

Community:
Big Horn County, Montana is rich in history, culture and time-honored traditions. It Includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations. Hardin (county seat) is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River and the edge of the Crow Reservation. The town is surrounded by productive farms and ranches. Coal mining has also contributed greatly to the local economy. Hardin, is located 46 miles southeast of Billings (largest city in the State) by way of Interstate 90. The Big Horn County Museum, Little Big Horn Battlefield and Chief Plenty Coups State Park provide interesting and important history of the area. The scenic Big Horn, Pryor and Wolf Mountain ranges are part of the Big Horn County landscape. Yellowtail Dam offers a majestic view of the water below. The spectacular Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is host to water sports. This area of Big Sky Country also offers fishing, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, camping, etc. for the outdoor enthusiast. Annual events in Big Horn County include: Little Big Horn Days, Native Days, Crow Fair & Rodeos.
