POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION TITLE:       Head Coach

FACILITY:                  Hardin High School

REPORTS TO:            Athletic / Activities Director

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The person in this position provides leadership, supervision, and organization of a specific athletic activity and will carry out the objectives of that program.  They help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, and appreciation for the values of discipline, and an increased level of self-esteem.  The Head Coach will establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Begins practice sessions on the opening date allowed by the MHSA

All teams will compete in the maximum number of contests allowed by the MHSA if it is reasonably possible to schedule this number

Holds first aid card and runs as safely as possible the program with proper training procedures.

Teaches and displays good sportsmanship

Any season that extends beyond the normal season/school year due to tournament participation shall be considered part of the coaching contract

Process end of year reports, and any other necessary reports, lists or forms and submits such reports to the Athletic Director, school and MHSA

Develops a daily and weekly practice schedule which will be approved by the Athletic Director prior to distribution to team members

YEAR-ROUND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains competency in rules, rule interpretations, meet procedures, coaching techniques, and general information about all aspects of the sport.  Encourages assistant coaches to do the same

Attends clinics, workshops, and meetings to keep abreast of new ideas, techniques, and rule changes

Implements proper procedures for out of season practices according to MHSA guidelines

Is active in professional organizations such as state coach’s association

Inventories, selects, cares for and maintains equipment

PRE-SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES:

Formulates objectives for the upcoming sports season

Assists Athletic Director with proper registration of all athletes

Reviews District policy on accident reporting and insurance procedures

Assists Athletic Director in compiling eligibility lists and other reports

Arranges for a systematic issuance of school equipment

Makes sure all athletes have had physicals and signed waiver granting permission to transport to nearest hospital in the event of injury before they may practice

Explains all regulations of the district presented in the Athletic Code

Clarifies to athletes the letter award policy

Selects and instructs team managers on proper care of equipment, facilities, and other assigned duties

Makes arrangements for all bus trips with Athletic Director

Prepares a written document of the method of squad cuts and awards system

Establishes performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition

Maintains on file a game book specifying usual season work-outs, off-season work-out, weight training program, suggested diet, schedule, and plays/strategy 

SEASONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Attend District, State, and National leadership and fall leadership conference

Assumes responsibility for constant care and supervision of equipment and facilities being used

Supervises control over all phases of teams in the program

Organizes and schedules practice sessions on a regular basis with the idea of developing the athlete’s greatest potential

Applies discipline in a firm, positive and consistent manner as outlined according to athletic policy

Emphasizes safety precautions and uses accepted training and injury procedures.  Adheres to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention and follow up

Conducts self and team in ethical manner during practice and contests

Reports outcome of home contests to media

Instructs players on rules and rule changes, and new ideas and techniques

Provides Athletic Director a file copy of all general correspondence and bulletins to student athletes and parents

Adheres to the rules and regulations of the School District regarding school bus regulations

Files discipline reports with the Athletic Director

Directly supervises or designates an adult supervisor of all dressing rooms and locks up equipment at the close of each practice or contest

Accompanies and directs the varsity team and assistant coaches in all interscholastic activities at home and away

Supervises team and insures proper conduct and discipline enroute to and at away from home contests

Requires that on all trips, team members dress in a manner becoming to themselves as individuals and as representatives of Hardin Schools

END OF SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES:

Arranges for cleaning, storing and conducting an inventory of all equipment

Evaluates past season

Arranges for the systematic return of all school equipment and holds the athlete responsible for all equipment not returned

Recommends student athletes who have fulfilled requirements for athletic letters, certificates or special awards

Recommends additions and/or improvements for the care and maintenance of facilities

Makes written recommendations to the Athletic Director personnel for assistant coaching positions

Submits recommendations for schedule for next year

Selects equipment and makes recommendations for purchase of same.

Maintains records of team and individual accomplishments.

 

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:

Meets MHSA requirements and passed coaching certification coursework

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

Exhibit qualities of leadership and organization ability and reflect a spirit of cooperation in working with staff and school administration

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Ability to follow both oral and written directions and instructions of the athletic director

Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

Ability to handle stressful situations

Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student matters

Ability to perform duties with an awareness of all District requirements and Board policies

 

EQUIPMENT USED:

Stopwatch, calculator, computer, copier, fax, audio visual equipment, telephone/voice mail, score-keeping equipment or other equipment germane to the sport/activity

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, occasionally walk and stand. The employee must be able to lift and / or move up to 50 pounds. Will travel from building to other sites.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee rarely performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). Guidance and reinforcement are usually available. The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity. The student body is 84% Native American.

Community: Big Horn County, Montana is rich in history, culture and time-honored traditions.  It Includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations. Hardin (county seat) is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River and the edge of the Crow Reservation. The town is surrounded by productive farms and ranches. Coal mining has also contributed greatly to the local economy. Hardin, is located 46 miles southeast of Billings (largest city in the State) by way of Interstate 90. The Big Horn County Museum, Little Big Horn Battlefield and Chief Plenty Coups State Park provide interesting and important history of the area. The scenic Big Horn, Pryor and Wolf Mountain ranges are part of the Big Horn County landscape.  Yellowtail Dam offers a majestic view of the water below. The spectacular Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is host to water sports.  This area of Big Sky Country also offers fishing, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, camping, etc. for the outdoor enthusiast.  Annual events in Big Horn County include: Little Big Horn Days, Native Days, Crow Fair, 4H County Fair, rodeos.
