POSITION TITLE:    Substitute

FACILITY:               Affiliated Buildings-Crow Agency-Hardin

REPORTS TO:         Building Principal

 

POSITION OVERVIEW: Substitute for Teachers

A substitute teacher takes over a classroom when the regular teacher is absent. Core duties include following provided lesson plans, taking attendance, maintaining classroom discipline, supervising students in and out of the room, and leaving a progress report for the permanent teacher

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teacher

Instructional Delivery: Executing lesson plans, enforcing curriculum guidelines, and adapting teaching methods to suit different student learning styles.

Classroom Management: Maintaining a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment while monitoring behavior and de-escalating conflicts.

Supervision: Overseeing students during non-classroom hours such as recess, lunch, and assemblies.

Administrative: Tracking daily attendance, grading classwork (typically for long-term assignments), and reporting daily progress to the administration and returning teacher.

Valid Montana Teacher Certification preferred

High school diploma, GED or equivalent minimum

POSITION OVERVIEW: Substitute for Classified Staff (Custodial, Paraprofessional, Secretary, Assistant Cook)

A substitute in this position is responsible to follow the instructions provided by the supervisor of the position they are filling. The Essential Duties and Responsibilities listed below are for full-time classified staff in the position and may vary depending on actual duties and building.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assistant Cook, Kitchen Assistant:

Prepare meals according to a planned menu and tested, uniform recipes, and determine if the finished product is of best quality, both in flavor and appearance before it is served

Assist with serving food in the cafeterias

Operate basic kitchen equipment used in quantity meal preparation

Share responsibility with other staff to ensure that all equipment in the cafeteria/kitchen area is in safe, working condition and notify the appropriate authority when repairs are needed

Report inferior quality of food to the appropriate authority

Use computer scanner, count money, make change, and complete related reports

Promote student satisfaction by merchandising and serving meals in an attractive manner

Strive to make salad bars appetizing to encourage and increase student consumption of healthy fresh fruit and vegetables

Cooperate and interact daily with people representing varied interests such as: Director and Assistant Director of School Nutrition, school administrators, teachers, classified staff members, students, community members, representatives of material and service providers, OPI officials, Food Service representatives from other schools

Serve food within assigned schools in the District

Follow the tenets of the district’s HACCP plan. Report violation of non-compliance to Director or Assistant Director of School Nutrition

Personally adhere to safe lifting practices, lock-out/tag-out, MSDS and similar safety regulations

Assist with the daily cleaning/sanitizing of equipment in the kitchen and related areas

Follow end of day lock up procedures; make sure all equipment is turned off

Accept responsibility for assignments and new or additional duties, flexibility in all types of situations including new problems

Assist in new kitchen employee training

Maintain high standards of sanitation and safety in the kitchen and cafeteria

Publicly represent the Food Service Department and Hardin Public Schools in a professional manner at all times

Custodian:

Sweep, mop, scrub, and wax floors

Vacuum rugs and carpets

Dust, wash, and polish furniture and woodwork

Clean restrooms, replenish supplies, and fill dispensers

Wash windows, walls, sinks, and fountains

Observe and report need for repairs and make minor repairs as time permits

Secure building at end of shift

May work in heights over 12’

Pick up trash and litter, empty and clean trash and garbage receptacles

Remove snow from walkways, steps

Do emergency cleanup, resulting from vandalism, breakage, spillage, or illness

Responsible for reporting unruly student activities, loitering, vandalism, or similar situations

Perform routine nontechnical maintenance duties with the use of household hand tools

Receive, store, and distribute supplies

Keep tools and equipment clean and operational

Maintain work related records and prepare various reports as directed

Paraprofessional:

Assist instructional personnel with development and presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises

Assist students individually or in small groups to reinforce and follow up learning activity

Assist in presentation of learning materials, instructional exercises, and testing in compliance with the student’s IEP.

Monitor and assist students through drill, practice, and study activities following presentation of instructional concepts by instructional personnel

Assist in supervision of students in the classroom, on study trip activities, on the playground, and in bus duty as directed

Listen to students read, read to students, explain words and meanings, rephrase materials, and provide similar learning examples

Assist students, if needed, with their personal hygiene

Perform general clerical duties for instructional personnel

Assist in management and shaping of student behavior through use of positive reinforcement strategies

Distribute and account for materials such as textbooks, supplies, and equipment; collect, assemble, catalog and distribute resource materials

Assist in maintaining student discipline

Assist in maintaining neat, orderly, and effective learning environment, including designing and displaying bulletin boards

Assist in maintaining a variety of reports and records

Assist in scoring tests; compute and record test scores and grades

May assist in parent conferences if requested by instructional personnel

Secretary:

Communicate with public, employing discretion and independent judgment, direct individuals to correct person and efficiently resolve their concerns

Make and receive phone calls, take messages, route calls, respond appropriately to requests for information

Handle assignment of substitutes for building employees; orientate new substitutes to building

Process attendance records for building staff, substitutes, and students

Prepare building staff timesheets for payroll clerk

Order, process, and maintain office and staff materials and supplies

Operate and maintain standard office equipment including computer, printer, copier, calculator/adding machine, typewriter

Compile student data, class lists, bus lists, student meal list, other projects as necessary

Maintain school records and files for building, principal, staff including a set of locked, confidential student files

Type, prepare, distribute, files records/reports, memos, correspondence, monthly statements, mailings, etc. related to building, principal

Process miscellaneous school communications and information material such as activities bulletins and notifications to parents of discipline problems

Make and record deposits

Distribute mail

File and maintain records pertaining to various school funds

Report any suspicious activity or unusual behavior

Provide appropriate first aid as needed, administer medication according to policy and regulations, contact Parents when children become ill at school, evaluate emergencies, and determine when to call the nurse

Coordinate and make special arrangements for events

Attend established traditional school sponsored activities (Back to School Night, Open House, programs, activities) agreed upon by the building principal

Serve as confidential secretary to the building principal

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  (This can vary depending on the position subbing for)

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, occasionally walk and stand. The employee must be able to lift and / or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
